Survey Update!

After a drizzly start to the week on Monday, we have had a brilliant start to the week and even got some sunshine at times. We have found and recorded many pitsteads and found a couple of ruinous buildings (although neither of them were the illusive woodsman huts!). We have seen some fantastic ancient trees including this incredible yew tree that will be centuries old, if not more.

We also found an unusual gatepost that contained six round holes, it is one half of a 'hek' gate, the other half of which would have contained six square holes. Posts that were round at one end and square at the other would have been held between the two gateposts. You can see that the holes are closer together at the bottom of the gatepost, this would have stopped younger animals, such as lambs from passing through it.

Tomorrow's weather forecast shows that there could be some light rain showers so if you are booked on for tomorrow please make sure to bring your waterproofs. There are still places available on the upcoming survey days, if you'd like to book a place go to https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/rusland-horizons-spring-woodland-archaeology-surveys-2018-registration-41456852562
